Part IV — Me
Part IV — Me
Part of this is just that I'm at a different stage than I was, and the priorities are genuinely different now. What they're pointed at is finding the thing I couldn't find before. I'm aware that's what every man says. I can't prove it to you and I'm not going to try.
What I can tell you is what it looked like from the inside before you turned up. I'd more or less concluded it wasn't going to happen for me, and I'd substituted a fantasy about buying a shipping container and putting it on a beach somewhere. I told you that on the eighteenth and I called it horseshit, and it was — a grown man planning a container on a beach isn't a life plan, it's a man arranging not to have one.
At thirty, a family was something I assumed would happen alongside everything else. That isn't what it is now. It's the thing everything else would be arranged around. My brother has it, my sister has it, my parents have had it my whole life, and I'm forty-three and the one who doesn't.
So don't take my word for it. You've said from the start that you'd rather let reality tell you. That's the right instinct, and it applies here more than anywhere.
Watch.
